EMD Dual 16-645E3A 2EXH T N XL L M4

The Dual EMD 16cyl 645E3A prime movers were used in Union Pacific's DDA40X locomotive. Each of the two prime mover provides 3,300 hp. The DDA40X is the most powerful single-unit locomotive ever built.

As the DDA40X program was a test, a number of experiments were conducted during the service life of these locomotives. The FM H-12-44 was a yard switcher produced by Fairbanks-Morse from May, 1950–March, 1961. The units featured a 1,200-horsepower (890 kW), six-cylinder opposed piston engine prime mover, and were configured in a B-B wheel arrangement mounted atop a pair of two-axle AAR Type-A switcher trucks, with all axles powered and geared for a top speed of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).

"Galloping Goose" is the popular name given to a series of seven railcars (officially designated as "motors" by the railroad), built in the 1930s by the Rio Grande Southern Railroad (RGS) and operated until the end of service on the line in the early 1950s.

Originally running steam locomotives on narrow gauge railways, the perpetually struggling RGS developed the first of the "geese" as a way to stave off bankruptcy and keep its contract to run mail to towns in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. more…
