The EMD 645 family of diesel engines were designed and manufactured by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. The 645 series was an evolution of the earlier 567 series and a precursor to the later 710 series. The 645 series engines entered production in 1965. All 645 engines utilize forced induction, with either a Roots blower or a turbocharger. The 645 series has a maximum engine speed of between 900 and 950 revolutions per minute (rpm), an increase over the 800 to 900 rpm maximum speed for the 567 series.

The ALCO 251 prime mover was the most popular and abundant prime mover ever made by the company. While it proved to be quite successful, it sadly outlived its original manufacturer. ALCO closed their doors in 1969. The 251 prime mover is actually still available to purchase today from Fairbanks Morse for use in marine, generator and locomotive uses.
The ALCO Century 855 was ALCO’s most powerful diesel-electric locomotive. Powered by a pair of 16 cylinder ALCO 251C diesel engines, and rated at 5,500 hp, it was ALCO's answer to the EMD DD35 and the GE U50. The C855 rode on four two-axle trucks, grouped in pairs linked by span bolsters, giving a wheel arrangement of B+B-B+B. The trucks and bolsters were similar to those under UP's earlier turbine locomotives. Only two A units and one B unit were ever built, all for the Union Pacific Railroad, which had also requested double-engined locomotives from EMD and GE in order to replace the turbines, which had become uneconomical to operate.
Union Pacific also wished to reduce the number of locomotives needed on a consist, to keep in line with their allowable gross weight limit. By consolidating several locomotives into one or two, this allowed them to lower the axle load on the rails, but to stay within the limits placed by the company. They spent their lives in the general freight pool at North Platte, however poor performance led to their early retirement and eventual scrapping by February 1972.

The Paducah GP10s were the result of a rebuild program upgrading GP7, GP8 and GP18 EMD locomotives. Unlike the GP16 program which recieved 645 power assemblies the GP10s retained a 567 16cyl prime mover. Now using a 567C block, a 4 stack exhaust was applied in most cases. Many smaller railroads still use GP10s and it was deemed a rather successful program.

V2 - This is our second version of this popular prime mover!
GE Evolution 12cyl "GEVO" Locomotives have a 4 stoke diesel engine and have been designed to be more efficient and more emission friendly than previous models. Evolution Series locomotives are equipped with either AC or DC traction motors, depending on the customer's preference, though admittedly there is little sound difference if any between the two.
All early GEVOs were delivered with the Nathan Airchime K5HL air horn. Later GEVOs started to recieve a slightly different K5HLL horn. Both are inlcuded with the file. Most if not all have been delivered with a Graham-White 373 E-Bell. This E-Bell is tied to the horn circuit in the locomotive and will play automatically when the horn is played. The ESU version also has this new feature. The bell can be activated by either pressing F1 or by pressing the horn using F2. The "Auto-Bell" can be turned off by removing the the Auto-Bell sound slot from F2. (CV31 = 16, CV32 = 2, CV319 = 0)
Another feature of the prototype is "Smart Start". For the sake of both emissions and fuel savings all GEVOs have been built with an auto shutdown/auto start feature. After the loco has been idle for a period time, the engine will shut down on its own. If the prime mover cools to a certain temperature the loco will automatically start again to keep from freezing. Our ESU version is also equipped with this "Smart Start" feature. If enabled, after idling for about 5 minutes, the engine will shut down and without doing anything to the throttle it will start again on its own depending on options set in CV48. If at any time during this shutdown mode you would like to run your loco, just turn the throttle slightly and the engine will go through it's start up cycle and then allow you to move it. The feature can also be turned off if it is deemed undesirable. By default this feature is off.
Though all GEVOs were delivered with Nathan K5HL or K5HLL air horns we've also included a few extra horns in case you wish to use something different. Due to the vast numbers of sounds included in the file we were not able to include our normal 16 horns, but we have included multiple for your choosing. These are selectable by using CV48.

The GE FDL-16 prime mover was first used in 1959 in the General Electric U25B locomotive. Over the years little changed in terms of sound until the "Dash-8" series of GE locomotives was introduced. Known for their throaty chug and shaft driven compressor (rather than the more modern “Whoop” electric compressor). There was an interim period following the "U Boats" that began the era in GE called the "Dash-7s". During this time many locos started receiving exhaust silencers and the shape of the exhaust changed to the "Bathtub" type. This created a subtle change in sound. The following GE locomotives used the 16cyl FDL prime mover with this type of configuration.

Beginning in the 1950s, the Union Pacific Railroad sought higher and higher horsepower ratings from its locomotives to help move increasingly heavier and longer trains. Gas-Turbine Electric Locomotives (GTEL) technology promised much higher horsepower ratings over the diesel-electric locomotive designs of the time. General Electric (GE) and American Locomotive Co. (ALCO) built the first GTEL design, a double-ended, 4,500 horsepower, B+B – B+B unit, delivered as UP #50 in 1949.
This groundbreaking design would kick off the “Turbine Era” on the UP, which saw GE building successively larger and more powerful GTELs that would power UP’s hottest trains over the next two decades. The basic principal of the GTEL saw a GE-designed and built gas turbine… essentially a type of jet engine… driving a generator that produced electricity , which was fed to the traction motors on the locomotive’s axels. This design offered several advantages over more conventional diesel-electric locomotive designs of the era, particularly in horsepower. While competing cab and hood designs of the era boasted 1,500 – 1,750 hp, the first GTELs boasted 4,500 hp. Another advantage of the GTEL was it being designed to burn Bunker C heavy fuel oil, which, at the time, was much less expensive compared to conventional diesel fuel oil. GE would build successive batches of GTELs for UP, with each new design featuring improvements and design changes learned from experience from their predecessors.
Despite their outstanding performance, the “Big Blows” were to have relatively short careers. One of the contributing factors to this was rising fuel costs; the once-cheap Bunker C fuel oil the turbines were designed to burn, which refiners practically couldn’t give away early on, saw its price per gallon rise dramatically in the 1960s, eventually negating the fuel cost advantage the turbines enjoyed over their diesel-electric contemporaries. Rising maintenance costs compared to diesel-electrics also became an issue. The turbine engines were complex pieces of machinery compared to a typical diesel prime mover, in particular the delicate turbine fan blades. These factors, along with advances in diesel-electric locomotive horsepower, and limitations on where the GTELs could operate, saw the first of the “Big Blows”, UP 1-4, retired in August of 1968, after scarcely 10 years of service. Their numbers continued to dwindle over the last few years of the decade, with UP #7 holding the distinction of being the last “Big Blow” to operate, pulling its last train on December 26th, 1969. All were officially retired by February 1970, closing out the loud and exciting Turbine Era on the Union Pacific.
As the Evolution of the GTEL Turbines progressed multiple versions were created. Among these were Single Unit and A-B sets with the Hostler Motor in the A unit and the Turbine in the B Unit. The file contains both Hoslter Motor and Turbine in one decoder. If modelling a Single unit just plug in and go! If using this in an A-B set 2 decoders will be needed. Simply turn the volume of the Turbine down in the A Unit decoder, and turn the volume of the Hostler Motor to 0 in the B Unit. DO NOT DISABLE them from function mapping as the Hostler motor sounds "talk" to the Turbine sounds inside the sound schedules within the decoder.
This file does contain "Full Throttle" capabilities. While the Turbine does not go up and down once turned on the Full Throttle abilities allow the Turbine to be Consisted with Diesels as this became a common practice in the late 1950's

The EMD 710 is a line of diesel engines built by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD). Introduced in 1985, the 710 series replaced the earlier EMD 645 series. Since its introduction, EMD has continually upgraded the 710G diesel engine. Power output has increased from 3,800 horsepower on 1985's 16-710G3A to 4,500 horsepower on 2012's 16-710G3C-T2. Over the production span of certain locomotive models, upgraded engine models have been fitted when these became available. For example, an early 1994-built SD70MAC had a 16-710G3B, whereas a later 2003-built SD70MAC would have a 16-710G3C-T1.
In 2005 EMD was released a Tier 2 710 prime mover for thier upcoming SD70M-2 and SD70ACe models. The SD70M-2 is a DC traction version of the SD70ACe, and the two models are nearly identical in every other respect. Like the SD70ACe, the SD70M-2 models are equipped with the 16-710G3C-T2 prime mover which is rated at 4,300 horsepower. One of the main differences in the SD70M-2/SD70ACes from previous SD70s is the addition of Air Start. This loud burst of air in the start sequence is not present on most earlier EMD locomotives. All SD70M-2s and SD70ACes, except for the ones bought by CITX, are equipped with the Airchime model K5LLA air horn and an electronic bell. Due to this Air Start these locomotives have a period of High Idle just after start up to recharge the air and warm up the locomotive.
Another feature of the prototype is "Smart Start". For the sake of both emissions and fuel savings all SD70M-2s and SD70ACes have been built with an auto shutdown/auto start feature.

Equipped with ESU "FULL THROTTLE" features!
MUST use LokProgrammer Version 4.4.21 or newer
GE Evolution 12cyl "GEVO" locomotives have a 4 stoke diesel engine and have been designed to be more efficient and more emission friendly than previous models. Evolution Series locomotives are equipped with either AC or DC traction motors, depending on the customer's preference, though admittedly there is little sound difference if any between the two.
All early GEVOs had been delivered with the Nathan Airchime K5HL air horn. Later GEVOs started to recieve a slightly different K5HLL horn. Both are inlcuded with the file. Most if not all have been delivered with a Graham-White 373 E-Bells.
For the sake of both emissions and fuel savings, all GEVOs have been built with an auto shutdown/auto start feature. After the loco has been idle for a period time, the engine will shut down on its own. If the prime mover cools to a certain temperature the loco will automatically start again to keep from freezing. Our ESU version is also equipped with this "Smart Start" feature. If enabled, after idling for about 5 minutes the engine will shut down. Without doing anything to the throttle, it will start again on its own depending on options set in CV48. If at any time during this shutdown mode you would like to run your loco, just turn the throttle slightly and the engine will go through its start up cycle and then allow you to move it. The feature can also be turned off if it is deemed undesirable. By default this feature is off.
Though all GEVOs were delivered with Nathan K5HL or K5HLL air horns, we've also included a few extra horns in case you wish to use something different. Due to the vast numbers of sounds included in the file we were not able to include our normal 16 horns, but we have included multiple for your choosing. These are selectable by using CV48.

CV48=0 GE GEVO-12 (no "Smart Start")
CV48=16 GE GEVO-12 (3 minute "Smart Start" cycle)
CV48=32 GE GEVO-12 (6 minute "Smart Start" cycle)
