In the late 1970s DR in German Democratic Republic ordered an multi-purpose electric loco. 646 units were produced. The four motor BR 243 (renumbered for BR 143 in 1994) reaches a maximum speed of 120 km/h. In Western Germany 143 successfully replaced worn out electrics BR 140/141 and 110 in commuter service.

The French four axle locos BB 63000 were built for heavy switching and medium freight service in 1953 till 1964. The diesel electric locos had a Sulzer diesel motor that developed 552 kW at 950 rpm. The 250 locos reached a maximum speed of 90 km/h. BB 63000 coupled to a steam heating car were used sometimes in regional passenger service on branch lines. (sound can also be used for the slovenian AZ 643).

For traction of trains for construction areas Swiss Rhetian Railway (RhB) ordered two diesel electric Gmf 4/4 242 and 243 at German manufacturer Kaelble-Gmeinder. The four axle locos are driven by a Caterpillar 12 cylinder prime mover 3412 DI-TA and reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

The dieselelectric locos 246 (builder name Traxx P160 DE) and 285 (Traxx F140 DE) were developed out of the famous Traxx family of German Bombardier Transportation. Prime mover is a MTU 16 V 4000 R 43 L that develops 3263 HP. For heavy switching and freight service German State Railway DB ordered 31 samples of diesel hydraulic Voith-Gravita® loco. Prime mover MTU 12V 4000 R43L delivers 1800 kW at 1800 rpm and enables the loco to reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Also loco rental service Northrail and HzL in Southern Germany bought two samples each.
