In 1972 Swiss narrow gauge Railway Furka-Oberalp-Bahn FO received five four axle electric locos with luggage compartment. The four motor locos developed 1032 kW and reached a maximum speed of 60 km/h in adhesion drive and 30 km/h using rack drive.

RhB Gem 4/4  LokSound 5 factory equipped sounds N XL L M4

For use under wire as a standard electric loco and to push snow plow Swiss Rhetian Railway (RhB) ordered two hybrid diesel electric locos Gem 4/4 in 1968. A 12 cylinder Cummins diesel motor generates the energy for the four electric traction motors. In both mode of operation the locos reach a maximum speed of 65 km/h.

SNCF TGV  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

It was developed in the 1970s by GEC-Alsthom and SNCF. Originally designed as turbotrains to be powered by gas turbines, the prototypes evolved into electric trains with the 1973 oil crisis. Following the inaugural service between Paris and Lyon in 1981 on the LGV Sud-Est ("LGV") (French: Ligne à Grande Vitesse, high-speed line), the network, centred on Paris, has expanded to connect main cities across France and in adjacent countries on combinations of high-speed and conventional lines.
