The Uceta GP16s were the result of a Seaboard Coast Line rebuild program upgrading GP7, GP9 and GP18 EMD locomotives. Unlike the GP10 program which retained a 567 16cyl prime GP16s recieved 645 power assemblies. A 4 stack exhaust was also applied in most cases. Many smaller railroads still use GP16s and it was deemed a rather successful program.

Recorded from a C39-8 with shaft driven Westinghouse compressor.

The SD60E program was designed to upgrade 1980's SD60s with current electronic controls and crash-worthiness upgrades in Norfolk Southern's Juniata shops in Altoona PA.

The GE FDL-12Cyl Prime Mover is different from the 7FDL Prime movers. The 7FDL were used in the "-7" series locomotives. FDL's were used primarily in the "U" Series Locomotives. In most cases the the FDL series was not used in locomotives built from 1977 forward.

There has been mass confusion on the GE 7FDL and GE FDL designations. From our research we have found that the prefix "7" lumps the engine into the GE category of large rotating machinery, the same prefix is used on their Generators and Alternators. During the late 1930s, the Union Pacific often used helpers to move trains from Ogden to Wasatch. The UP wanted to simplify this move so they asked their "Department of Research and Mechanical Standards" (DoRMS) to design a locomotive that could pull a 3600 ton train unassisted over the 1.14% grade of the Wasatch.
