In the early 1930s the German Waggonfabrik Wismar developed a small two motor railcar. Each of the two motors develop 50 HP at the cars with 4000 mm wheelbase and 90 HP at the longer ones with 6000 mm wheelbase. The railcars reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

For heavy switching and freight service German State Railway DB ordered 31 samples of diesel hydraulic Voith-Gravita® loco. Prime mover MTU 12V 4000 R43L delivers 1800 kW at 1800 rpm and enables the loco to reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Also loco rental service Northrail and HzL in Southern Germany bought two samples each.

Apart from the modified crash-optimized locomotive body, the second 185 generation can be distinguished from the first generation by a different noise development. The acoustically striking difference is mainly due to the modified AC converter system. The tripod bearing drive was also retained on the two-system locomotive internally designated as the F140 MS2. Under AC conditions, the four-axle vehicles deliver 5,600 kW and reach a top speed of 140 km/h. Under DC contact lines, the power is more…

Based on the diesel-electric series DE 1024 with three-phase power transmission, MaK and Siemens developed the Di6 for the Norwegian State Railways NSB. The MaK 12M282 diesel engine developed 2650 kW at 1000 rpm and generated the power for the six traction motors. Since the locomotive with its top speed of 160 km/h was also to be used in heavy passenger train service, it was fitted with a train heating system. The twelve locomotives had various problems, two locomotives burned out. After more…

ÖBB 2070  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

At the beginning of the 2000s, the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB ordered 90 class 2070 shunting locomotives, nick-named Hector, from German Vossloh. The 12-cylinder diesel engine from Caterpillar develop 738 kW at 2100 rpm. The top speed is 100 km/h. These locomotives, which MaK calls Type G 800 BB, form the basis of the fourth type of the manufacturer. The locomotives are used in heavy shunting operations and pull regional freight trains.
