The classes (BR) 215 and 218 diesel locomotives of the Western German Railway (DB) are used in mixed service since 1968.

218 101 to 194, 218 242 to 288 were equipped with a 12 cylinder 4 stroke main Diesel from MAN that was later called MTU 12 V 956 TB10 that generates 2500 HP. The 2800 HP version of this motor is called MTU 12 V 956 TB11.

In the late 1980s the exhaust system of BR 218 with the 12 V motor had been optimized. Since 1995 many of the 218 are equipped with motors called "MTU 12 more…

The most famous East German diesel loco is the 132. The six axle diesel electric loco is nicknamed “Ludmilla” by train fans. 709 samples of the 3000 HP locos had been delivered by Lokomotivfabrik Woroschilowgrad in Lugansk (Soviet Union today Ukraine) between 1973 and 1983 to the In the late 1960s the railway of the German Democratic Republic (DR) ordered successors for their V200 class. The new class should have an electric heating to pull also passenger trains. The first two series (class 130 more…

In 1958 Belgian State Railway NMBS ordered 55 samples of four-axle diesel electric loco from manufacturer Cockerill-Sambre. The locos had been numbered for 201.001-055 (later 5901-5955). The BLW 8-608A motor is an American design and develops 1750 hp. The locos reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h and were used in passenger and freight service till 1988.

V90 (MTU-12V-652)  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

In the 1960s the German State Railway (DB) replaced old fashioned steam locos in heavy shunting service. The total new dieselhydraulic V90 is driven by a 12 cyl engine MTU MB 12 V 652 TA that delivers 1100 HP at 1400 rpm. The locos have a maximum speed of 80 km/h. In the 1980s DB installed shunting couplers and a radio control in the now called BR 290 and renumbered them in BR 294. Many of the very dependable locos are still in service.

DSB MZ I  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

Between 1967 and 1969 the Danish State Railways DSB purchased 10 units of the diesel-electric series MZ I, and in the following year 16 units of the type MZ II, which differ from the former only in a changed position of the battery box and the air reservoir. Traditional American engine technology works in the locomotive bodies manufactured by Frichs. The diesel engine chosen was the 2426 kW (at 900 rpm) 16-cylinder two-stroke engine 16-645 E3 from EMD, which generates the energy for the six more…

Between 1981 and 1985 the Danish State Railways DSB purchased 37 units of the diesel-electric series ME from the consortium Henschel, BBC, Scandia. Due to the positive experience with American drive technology, the 2427 kW (at 900 rpm) 16-cylinder two-stroke engine 16-645 E3B from EMD was chosen as the diesel engine, which generates the energy for the six traction motors. With a top speed of 175 km/h, the six-axle vehicles equipped with push-pull and multiple traction control were initially more…

BR261  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

After Millenium the German State Railway (DB) need to order new locos to replace old fashioned shunting locos of Classes 362 - 365 (former BR V60) and 290 - 295 (former BR V90). The German Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co KG developed the BR261 diesel locomotive. The prime mover of version 10BB is MTU 8V 4000 R42 and develops 1000 kW at 1800 rpm. With a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a tractive power of 258 kN the BR261 is used in heavy shunting service as well as for mid range freight more…

The BR 119 (since 1990 BR 219) had been developed by Rumanian manufacturer „Lokomotivfabrik 23. August“ Bukarest as two motor diesel locomotive for the GDR state railway DR . The two traction motors delivered 1350 HP at 1500 rpm each and enabled the loco to reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h. For the use also on branch lines the six axle loco has a load per axle of 16 tons only. As the motors had been unreliable, the DR interchanged them with turbo charged 12 KVD motors of V180/BR 118 in the more…
