In the late 1950s the narrow gauge Rhetian Railway (RhB) of Switzerland recommended stronger locos for haevy freight and passenger service. After a pre-series of two six axle locos (#701 and #702) the RhB ordered a series of five more locos (#703 - #707) that show differences in front design. Technical equipment of the locos is the same. In 1965 German DB ordered the first diesel hydraulic locomotive with additional gas turbine power. The V169 001 delivered 3200 HP and reached a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The gas turbine worked automatically when the engineer activated the booster notch while the diesel motor works in (highest) notch 15. In 1974 after around 9 years in heavy passenger service the now called 219 001 had a defective gas turbine so DB dismounted this booster and used the loco for 3 additional years.

In 1965 the polish Pafawag built English Electric design Class 83 in license as classified by the Polish State Railway (PKP) as EU07. Between 1965 and 1994 total 489 samples devided into two externally slightly different series left the factory. The four motor four axle locos (traction motor type EE541) deliver 2080 kW and reach a maximum speed of 125 km/h (with different gearing 140 km/h). Some locos are still in use at PKP.

Between 1965 and 1974 Belgian State Railway SNCB ordered 95 samples of tree axle side rod switchers Reeks 73. The ABC six cylinder traction motors T695 SA deliver 550 kW and enable the loco to reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

To modernize the shunting service, the British State Railways BR procured 996 units of the Class 08 based on an LMS design from 1952. The three-axle diesel-electric locomotive had an output of 350 hp(261 kW/h, Speed 15 mph) and reached a top speed of 32 km/h. The two DC traction motors transmit their power to the wheel sets via coupling rods. 26 other locomotives received a gear reduction adapted for higher speeds and were listed as Class 09..

In 1924 German Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft DRG received the first sample of side rod equipped electric loco E32. The 29 locos developed 1170 kW and reached a maximum speed of 75 km/h. In the 1930s eight locos were re-geared for a maximum speed of 90 km/h. In 1971 the last remaining locos quitted service at the DB.

ÖBB 4010  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

Between 1965 and 1978 Austrian State Railways ÖBB received 29 samples of eletric passenger train 4010. The four traction motors developed 2480 kW and reached a maximum speed of 150 km/h. In 1990 the trains received automatic doors instead of the old pneumatic ones.

SNCF CC72000  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

Between 1967 and 1974, the French state railway SNCF purchased 92 copies of the six-axle CC 72000 for fast passenger traffic on non-electrified main lines. The 16-cylinder diesel engine AGO V16 ESHR from SACM has an output of 2650 kW at 1350 rpm and generates the energy for the two electric drive motors TAO 656 B1 in the bogies. The maximum speed is 160 km/h.

After the Second World War, various European locomotive manufacturers began developing diesel-electric locomotives, which began to displace steam traction in the USA. In Sweden, Nydqvist and Holm AB (NoHAB) acquired the license to manufacture diesel locomotives for the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in 1949. Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft DRG ordered 32 samples of electric railcar ET 85 in 1927. The four-axle units develop 500 kW and reach a maximum speed of 75 km/h (ET 85 05 and 09 enabled for 100 km/h).
