In 1965 German DB ordered the first diesel hydraulic locomotive with additional gas turbine power. The V169 001 delivered 3200 HP and reached a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The gas turbine worked automatically when the engineer activated the booster notch while the diesel motor works in (highest) notch 15. In 1974 after around 9 years in heavy passenger service the now called 219 001 had a defective gas turbine so DB dismounted this booster and used the loco for 3 additional years.

SNCF CC6500  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

For traction of french high speed trains French State Railway SNCF ordered 78 samples of six axle electric loco CC 6500 in 1969. The two motor units develop 5900 kW and reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h. In 2007 the last CC 6500 quitted service.

In 1957 German MaK Kiel factory offered a four axle side rod diesel locomotive MaK 650D. The 21 samples of this loco were equip with 6 cylinder prime mover MS301CK that delivered 650 HP at 750 rpm and enabled the loco to reach a maximum speed of 71 km/h.

The new locomotive program of the Deutsche Reichsbahn DR after WW II contained a tank locomotive with a drive wheel diameter of 1,600 mm and a top speed of 90 km/h. The 88 1'D2 'tank locomotives designed for commuter train service had an axle load of 18 t. BR MPV Windhoff  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

Based on the CargoSprinter railcar from the 1990s, Windhoff developed a modular platform for self-propelled railway service and rescue vehicles. The vehicles, known as Multi Purpose Vehicles MPV, are powered by two 6-cylinder MTU diesel power packs with a flanged ZF gearbox. The 780 kW four-axle vehicles reach a top speed of 100 km/h. From 1999, the British state infrastructure operator Network Rail procured a total of 18 single and 32 double units for work on the rail network.

The 2-8-2 wheel configuration on steam locomotives was one of the most highly used configurations made. This type of locomotive with 2 pilot wheels, 8 drive wheels, and 2 trailing wheels to support a larger firebox was first built for the Emperor of Japan, thus the name Mikado type. The first Mikado built for service in the US was built in 1901 and was owed by the Bismarck, Washburn and Great Falls until 1904 when it was acquired by the Soo Line.
