In 1957 German MaK Kiel factory offered a four axle side rod diesel locomotive MaK 650D. The 21 samples of this loco were equip with 6 cylinder prime mover MS301CK that delivered 650 HP at 750 rpm and enabled the loco to reach a maximum speed of 71 km/h.

From 1964, British Rail (BR) purchased a total of 56 diesel-hydraulic Class 14s to transport light trains between marshalling yards and industrial areas. For traction of french high speed trains French State Railway SNCF ordered 78 samples of six axle electric loco CC 6500 in 1969. The two motor units develop 5900 kW and reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h. In 2007 the last CC 6500 quitted service.

In 1971 German Federal Railway DB ordered 42 sampels of triple dieselhydraulic railcar VT 614. A MAN diesel motor D 3650 HM 12 U in both of the cab cars developed 331 kW at 2150 rpm. The railcars reached a maximum speed of 140 km/h and were sold or scrapped until 2010.
