For traction of trains for construction areas Swiss Rhetian Railway (RhB) ordered two diesel electric Gmf 4/4 242 and 243 at German manufacturer Kaelble-Gmeinder. The four axle locos are driven by a Caterpillar 12 cylinder prime mover 3412 DI-TA and reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

With diesel-electric Blue Tiger DE-AC 33C German ADtranz entered the market of heavy freight diesel locos in 1996. After delivery of 30 samples for Pakistan and 20 for Malaysia another 10 were ship to some private railroads in Germany. The prime mover GE 7FDL 12 EFI delivers 2460 kW at 1050 rpm and produces the energy for the six traction motors GE GEB 15. The loco reaches a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

For replacement of old fashioned steam shunters Swiss State Railway SBB ordered 46 samples of diesel electric four axled Bm 4/4. The 12 cylinder diesel develops 620 kW and enables the loco to reach a maximum speed of 75 km/h.

In 1938 German „Wehrmacht“ received first samples of three-axle shunting locos for service in military facilities. Most units were powered by six-cylinder diesel MWM RHS235S. The side rod equipped locos reached a maximum speed of 55 km/h at 700 rpm. After WW II both German state railways overtook several units, some were sold at private owners.

German Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) received 64 samples of 2-axle diesel railcar VT 135 061-064, 067-076 and 083-132. After WW II DB renumbered them for VT 70.9, DR for BR 186. The 6 cylinder diesel prime mover enabled the railcar to reach a maximum speed of 75 km/h.
