For heavy switching and freight service German State Railway DB ordered 31 samples of diesel hydraulic Voith-Gravita® loco. Prime mover MTU 12V 4000 R43L delivers 1800 kW at 1800 rpm and enables the loco to reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Also loco rental service Northrail and HzL in Southern Germany bought two samples each.

BR227 / V170 / AA16 NoHAB MY  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

After the Second World War, various European locomotive manufacturers began developing diesel-electric locomotives, which began to displace steam traction in the USA. In Sweden, Nydqvist and Holm AB (NoHAB) acquired the license to manufacture diesel locomotives for the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in 1949. The Americans owned an export version of the F-series, which had a driver's cab at both ends. For the lighter superstructure in Europe, locos were equipped qith six instead of four axles. more…

V180 DR / BR118 BR228 DB  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

To replace medium-duty steam locomotive series in passenger and freight train service, the Deutsche Reichsbahn DR developed the twin-engine V180 series with diesel-hydraulic drive in the late 1950s. The four-axle vehicles, initially equipped with two 900 hp twelve-cylinder Type 12 KVD 21 A diesel engines, reached a top speed of 120 km/h. The locomotives delivered from 1965 received the second expansion stage of the diesel engine. This also applied to the six-axle versions, which were heavier more…

V90 (MTU-12V-652)  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

In the 1960s the German State Railway (DB) replaced old fashioned steam locos in heavy shunting service. The total new dieselhydraulic V90 is driven by a 12 cyl engine MTU MB 12 V 652 TA that delivers 1100 HP at 1400 rpm. The locos have a maximum speed of 80 km/h. In the 1980s DB installed shunting couplers and a radio control in the now called BR 290 and renumbered them in BR 294. Many of the very dependable locos are still in service.

BR 216 / V160  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

In 1964 series production of dieselhydraulic main line loco V160 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn DB started. The four axle loco was driven by a 16 cylinder diesel motor MB 16V 652 TB. The 1900-HP-locos were used in medium passenger and freight duty and reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

BR261  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

After Millenium the German State Railway (DB) need to order new locos to replace old fashioned shunting locos of Classes 362 - 365 (former BR V60) and 290 - 295 (former BR V90). The German Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co KG developed the BR261 diesel locomotive. The prime mover of version 10BB is MTU 8V 4000 R42 and develops 1000 kW at 1800 rpm. With a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a tractive power of 258 kN the BR261 is used in heavy shunting service as well as for mid range freight more…

BR 219 / V169  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

In 1965 German DB ordered the first diesel hydraulic locomotive with additional gas turbine power. The V169 001 delivered 3200 HP and reached a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The gas turbine worked automatically when the engineer activated the booster notch while the diesel motor works in (highest) notch 15. In 1974 after around 9 years in heavy passenger service the now called 219 001 had a defective gas turbine so DB dismounted this booster and used the loco for 3 additional years.

BR Class 08  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

To modernize the shunting service, the British State Railways BR procured 996 units of the Class 08 based on an LMS design from 1952. The three-axle diesel-electric locomotive had an output of 350 hp(261 kW/h, Speed 15 mph) and reached a top speed of 32 km/h. The two DC traction motors transmit their power to the wheel sets via coupling rods. 26 other locomotives received a gear reduction adapted for higher speeds and were listed as Class 09..
