The Uceta GP16s were the result of a Seaboard Coast Line rebuild program upgrading GP7, GP9 and GP18 EMD locomotives. Unlike the GP10 program which retained a 567 16cyl prime GP16s recieved 645 power assemblies. A 4 stack exhaust was also applied in most cases. Many smaller railroads still use GP16s and it was deemed a rather successful program.

The Baldwin RF-16 was a 1,600-horsepower cab unit-type diesel locomotive built for freight service by the Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1950 and 1953. All RF-16s were configured with a B-B wheel arrangement and ran on two AAR Type B two-axle road trucks, with all axles powered.
