BR 704 N XL L M4

In 1977, based on the VT 627, the German Deutsche Bundesbahn DB ordered five test vehicles of the four-axle catenary inspection rail car 704. The four-axle vehicles, classed as BR 704, had a diesel-hydraulic power transmission. Propulsion was initially provided by two identical, independent drive systems with Deutz twelve-cylinder diesel engines, one of which was replaced by a more modern and lower-emission Deutz engine from 1986 onwards. The 140 km/h four-axle vehicles were intended to replace more…

BR 75.1-3 / Badische VI b N XL L M4

German Badische Staatsbahn ordered 173 samples of 2-6-2 tank engine IV b for steep grades of Black Forrest lines. The two cylinder locos developed 540 HP and reached a maximum speed of 80 km/h.

BR 78 N XL L M4

In 1912 Prussian State Railway ordered the first of 462 samples of the 4-6-4 saddle tank loco T18. The two-cylinder loco developed 1140 HP and reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h. The locos were used for passenger trains on main and branch lines and stayed in service until 1974.

BR 83.10 N XL L M4

The new locomotive program of the Deutsche Reichsbahn DR after WW II contained a four-coupled tank locomotive with a drive wheel diameter of 1250 mm and a top speed of 60 km/h. The locomotive, which was designed for operation on branch lines, had an axle load of only 15 t. In accordance with their intended use, all locomotives had a bell next to the chimney. The last of the 27 units built from 1955 onwards was retired in 1974.

BR151 Electric loco E18 had been the most important electric loco for passenger service of former Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). Between 1935 and 1940 53 samples of E18 had been built. The locos more…

BR132 DR/BR232 N XL L M4

The most famous East German diesel loco is the 132. The six axle diesel electric loco is nicknamed “Ludmilla” by train fans. 709 samples of the 3000 HP locos had been delivered by Lokomotivfabrik Woroschilowgrad in Lugansk (Soviet Union today Ukraine) between 1973 and 1983 to the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR). The 132 reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h and were used for passenger service as well as for heavy freight trains. Even 2015 around 40 units (1994 renumbered for BR 232) are still in use by more…

BR245 / Traxx DE ME N XL L M4

BR 245 is the brand new diesel electric multi-motor loco of German State Railway DB. Based on the electric locos BR 145-185 new 245 shares around 75 % of the parts with them. The four Caterpillar CAT C18 diesel motors develop 563 kW each. The loco is able to reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Only sometimes the traction motors need the energy of all of the four motors, so the electronic system decides by itself to start or to switch off motors during operation.

Class 56 N XL L M4

Between 1976 and 1984, British Rail had 135 examples of the six-axle class 56 freight locomotive built. The final production of the first 30 of the series created according to BR plans was carried out with sub-assemblies in Romania at Electroputere. The following locomotives were assembled in England. The 16-cylinder Ruston-Paxman 16RK3CT diesel engine produced 2625 kW and generated the power for the six traction motors. In favor of reliability, the power was reduced to 2420 kW at 900 rpm.
