In 1957 German State Railway (DB) introduced it’s most powerful member of the so called “Einheits” electro locomotive family. The massive six axle six motor locomotives delivered 4500 kW and reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h. In 2003 last remaining 150 quitted service, but two locos are preserved in DB Museum.

BR250 DR / BR155  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

To haul fast and heavy passenger and freight trains on electrified main lines, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) developed the Class 250 electric locomotives in the early 1970s. With a power output of 5400 kW, the 273 six-axle locomotives built between 1974 and 1984 were the most powerful electric locomotives in the DR's fleet. Reaching speeds of up to 125 km/h, the Class 250 could even haul express trains, as the maximum permissible line speed in East Germany was 120 km/h. Classified as Class 155 more…

BR420 / ET420  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

Since the three-car Class 420 S-Bahn multiple units were introduced for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, they are often referred to as the "Olympic multiple units." With their thyristor-controlled traction control, Deutsche Bahn (DB) was breaking new ground at the time. Because the 2400 kW of power was distributed across all twelve axles, the three-car units, equipped with axle-hung traction motors, exhibited excellent acceleration. The three prototypes were followed by eight production series, more…

ICE 3 - BR403  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

For high-speed passenger service the German DB AG ordered 50 units of electric trains ICE 3. Delivery started in 1999. Four of the eight cars are motor cars that develop 8000 kW in complete. The ICE 3 reach a maximum speed of 330 km/h. The mono-system trains are numbered Class 403. For cross border service in Belgium, France and the Netherlands another 17 units of four-system train of Class 406.

For new electric locomotive class 187 Bombardier used its experience with American ALP-45DP locos. The 187 develops 5600 kW in all electric mode and reaches a maximum speed of 140 km/h. A 180 kW diesel motor enables the loco to pull a train upon non-electrified tracks with 50 km/h. The first three samples of class 187 were bought by Railpool leasing company. Those locos were leased to Swiss BLS railway. ===> (swiss radio communication selectable via CV 48 = 1) <===

E18 / BR118  LokSound 5 European Sound files N XL L M4

Electric loco E18 had been the most important electric loco for passenger service of former Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). Between 1935 and 1940 53 samples of E18 had been built. The locos reached a maximum speed of 150 km/h and stayed in service till 1985 (DB) and 1992 (DR).

In Czechoslovakia two different tensions (3 kV and 25 kV) were used by State Railway ČSD. For easier handling of passenger trains between Praha and Bratislava ČSD ordered 20 samples of 160 km/h electrics ES 499.0. 18 locos, renumbered for ŽSR/ZSSK class 350, are still in service in Slovakia.
