The 1930s were a decade of major global innovations in the field of railway technology. New electric and diesel-powered locomotives revolutionised the world on rails. Steam locomotives were also improved and attracted a great deal of attention by breaking world records in Germany and Britain, attaining speeds of 200 km/h. How-ever, experts were well aware that the traditional steam engine had reached the end of the road, at least as far as further increases in speed were concerned. Possible more…

Bavarian fast train four-cylinder steam locomotive S 3/6 was produce in 15 series between 1908 and 1931. The locos developed 1770 HP and reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The locos were famous for pulling international luxury trains like “Rheingold” or “Wien-Oostende-Express”.

BR 01  LokSound V4.0 European Soundfiles H0 N XL L M4

The BR 01 had been the first type of the Einheitslok-Progamm of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). Starting in 1925 the DRG ordered 231 locos. The 2 cylinder 01 reached a maximum speed of 120 (later 130 km/h). Both German Railways DB and DR needed the 01 after 2nd World War so the modernized 50 (DB) and 35 (DR) locos of BR 01 e.g. with new boilers. In 1949 the Deutsche Bundesbahn had ordered 105 locos of Class 23 steam locomotives to replace old-fashioned Prussian P8 locos. The 2 cylinder locos developed 1785 HP and reached a maximum speed of 110 km/h. They were used for passenger service, sometimes also for fast trains. Last 23 quitted service in 1975, but eight locos can be found at railroad museums in Germany and the Nederlands.

In 1939 German Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft DRG received 1st of more than 3100 samples of 2-10-0 two-cylinder steam loco BR 50. The loco developed 1625 HP and reached a maximum speed of 80 km/h. With its axle load of just 15,2 tons the locos were used even on branch lines with light weight rails. Locos of DB quitted service in 1977, the DR locos were used for ten more years.
