In the 1950s Deutsche Reichsbahn DR of GDR needed a high-speed locomotive to test new passenger cars. The testing department of DR developed the 18 201 out of tank loco 61 002, a new boiler (out of “Reko” re-design programme) and the cylinders of a test loco. The loco develops 1590 HP and reaches a maximum speed of 176 km/h. 18 201 is the fastest operable steam locomotive in the world.

The Ivh of Badische Staatsbahn, later the 18³ series, was purchased from 1918 as an express steam locomotive primarily for the Rhine Valley Railway Basel - Mannheim. The manufacturer of all 20 machines was the renowned Munich locomotive factory J.A. Maffei. The IVh was designed as a 4-cylinder composite engine. In 1908 the locomotive factory J.A. Maffei was commissioned by the Royal Bavarian State Railway to develop a new express locomotive based on the IVf delivered to the Baden State Railway. The series a-c and f-i with 1870 mm high driving wheels were designated as series 18.4 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft DRG, as were the series d and e equipped with 2000 mm driving wheels. In 1912 Prussian State Railway ordered the first of 462 samples of the 4-6-4 saddle tank loco T18. The two-cylinder loco developed 1140 HP and reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h. The locos were used for passenger trains on main and branch lines and stayed in service until 1974.

The Prussian Railway Administration KPEV had a total of 462 examples of the 1140 hp 2'C2' T18 tank locomotives built between 1912 and 1923. The manufacturer Vulcan delivered twenty machines to Württemberg in 1919. The original task was to transport fast passenger trains on short connections. The two-cylinder locomotives could be used forwards and backwards at 100 km/h and thus did not have to be turned at the end point.
