The Denver and Rio Grande Western K-27 is a class of 3 ft narrow gauge 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotives built for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903. Known by their nickname "Mudhens," they were the first and the most numerous of the four K classes of Rio Grande narrow gauge engines to be built. Of the original fleet of locomotives, two survive to this day and operate on heritage railways in the United States.

BR 85 had been develop for trains on steep grades by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) in 1932. Ten units of the 3 cylinder 2-10-2 had been built. They developed 1500 HP and reached a maximum speed of 80 km/h. In 1961 last sample of 85 quitted service at Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB).

Canadian National No. 7470 is a O-18a class 0-6-0 "Switcher" type steam locomotive that currently works on the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, New Hampshire.

7470 was built by the Grand Trunk Railway Point St. Charles Shops at Montreal, Quebec in June 1921. The Grand Trunk classified the switcher as F9 Class and numbered it as Grand Trunk Railway No. 1795. In the 1950s Deutsche Reichsbahn DR of GDR needed a high-speed locomotive to test new passenger cars. The testing department of DR developed the 18 201 out of tank loco 61 002, a new boiler (out of “Reko” re-design programme) and the cylinders of a test loco. The loco develops 1590 HP and reaches a maximum speed of 176 km/h. 18 201 is the fastest operable steam locomotive in the world.

The Ivh of Badische Staatsbahn, later the 18³ series, was purchased from 1918 as an express steam locomotive primarily for the Rhine Valley Railway Basel - Mannheim.
