The new locomotive program of the Deutsche Reichsbahn DR after WW II contained a four-coupled tank locomotive with a drive wheel diameter of 1250 mm and a top speed of 60 km/h. The locomotive, which was designed for operation on branch lines, had an axle load of only 15 t. In accordance with their intended use, all locomotives had a bell next to the chimney. Bavarian fast train four-cylinder steam locomotive S 3/6 was produce in 15 series between 1908 and 1931. The locos developed 1770 HP and reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The locos were famous for pulling international luxury trains like “Rheingold” or “Wien-Oostende-Express”.

The BR 01 had been the first type of the Einheitslok-Progamm of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). Starting in 1925 the DRG ordered 231 locos. The 2 cylinder 01 reached a maximum speed of 120 (later 130 km/h). Both German Railways DB and DR needed the 01 after 2nd World War so the modernized 50 (DB) and 35 (DR) locos of BR 01 e.g. with new boilers. Nevertheless original 01 stayed in service until the early 1970s.
