In 1908 the locomotive factory J.A. Maffei was commissioned by the Royal Bavarian State Railway to develop a new express locomotive based on the IVf delivered to the Baden State Railway. The series a-c and f-i with 1870 mm high driving wheels were designated as series 18.4 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft DRG, as were the series d and e equipped with 2000 mm driving wheels. For service on steep grades prussian state railway (KPEV) ordered 45 samples of 2-10-2 steam locos T20. Successor DRG re-numbered them for 95.0. The locos delivered 1620 HP and reach a maximum speed of 65 km/h. The powerful locos were used for short line passenger and freight service. After WW II 14 locos were used by DB till 1958. DR rebuilt 24 samples with oil firing equipment and used them till 1981.

Bavarian fast train four-cylinder steam locomotive S 3/6 was produce in 15 series between 1908 and 1931. The locos developed 1770 HP and reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The locos were famous for pulling international luxury trains like “Rheingold” or “Wien-Oostende-Express”.

In 1912 Prussian State Railway ordered the first of 462 samples of the 4-6-4 saddle tank loco T18. The two-cylinder loco developed 1140 HP and reached a maximum speed of 100 km/h. The locos were used for passenger trains on main and branch lines and stayed in service until 1974.

In the early 1900s narrow gauge railway RhB of Switzerland needed stronger locos. Swiss locomotive manufacturer SLM Winterthur built 29 samples of 2-4-0 locos G 4/5. The locos deliver 800 HP and reach a maximum speed of 45 km/h. After electrification of the whole rail net RhB sold or scrapped the locos except for two samples that rest in Switzerland for snow clearance duty or for railfan trains.
