The EPA “Tier” emissions standards are a series, or Tiers, of allowable emissions levels based upon a locomotives’ date of manufacture. The highest and most stringent tier level, Tier 4, sets maximum allowable NOx and hydrocarbon emissions levels for locomotives built for domestic use 2015 onward.
While similar in appearance to previous GE GEVo designs, the Tier 4 models featured a longer frame compared to their predecessors. This allows for a larger radiator “cab” (GE refers to the various sections of the long hood as “cabs”), and a "hump" over the engine cab for advanced exhaust treatment equipment.
Initially, a boxy housing filled the entire roofline on the blue-painted field test/demonstrator units. Due to changes in treatment equipment and clearance issues, the "hump" would decrease in size and shape into a boxy compartment around the exhaust on initial production units. This culminated in an angled compartment surrounding the exhaust manifold on the latest production versions (2016+).
Despite boxier engine cab rooflines and a radically styled radiator cab, the basic Tier 4 design shares a family appearance with GE safety cab-equipped units going back to the DASH-9s of the 1990s. It even includes the same 12-cylinder GEVo-12 series prime mover and 4,400hp as its predecessor model.
The Tier 4 units have proven to be popular with the major railroads including BNSF Railway, Canadian National, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific. While GE has settled on a basic carbody design to keep production costs down, there are notable variations and detail differences due to customer specifications.
With many units built for railroads across the US and in Canada, the Tier 4 GEVo can be seen operating nationwide in a variety of assignments.
File is set up for Flashing Ditchlights. This is not correct for all railroads, for UP, BNSF, and others please change the following CVs to to have ditchlights remain constant when horn is blown.

Walthers E9m Union Pacific Rebuild

In June, 1992, UP 949, 951 and 963B were sent to VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky to be completely remanufactured. This included a new 16 cylinder 2000-horsepower EMD 645 engine to replace the original twin 12-cylinder 1,200-horsepower 567 engines. An AR10 alternator and a GP38-2 design electrical system were also installed.
The frame was modified on each unit to accept the single 16-cylinder engine, AR10 main alternator and air compressor. A GP38-2 electrical cabinet was installed in each unit. Extended range dynamic brakes were installed, as were modern control stands, etc. New radiators and rebuilt cooling fans were installed, along with new grid blowers.
SmartStart and cab air conditioning was installed in 2001.
Retained by UP as part of heritage fleet at Cheyenne, Wyoming, for special service.

The American Locomotive Company's model 244 prime mover was developed during the mid-1940s to power its post-war diesel locomotives. Interestingly, while Alco helped pioneer diesel technology dating back to the 1920s it had difficulty truly competing against Electro-Motive-Division due to reliability issues with its diesel engines. Before Alco began implementing the 244 in its locomotives the builder had spent most of the 1930s developing an earlier model that was used in most of its early switchers. The new prime mover was supposed to usher in a new era for Alco but instead saw it slip further behind EMD in the marketplace. During the early 1950s the manufacturer replaced the engine with the more reliable 251 that powered its Century series. It would prove to be the company's last engine as it exited the market before 1970.
This sound file would be appropriate for the following locomotives:
RS-2, RS-3, RSC-2, RSC-3, RSD-4, RSD-5
Although there are slight differences, this sound file could also be used in the following locomotives:
FA-1, FB-1, FA-2, FB-2, FPA-2, FPB-2

This project is a normal idle version. It has a single exhaust stack.
File also contains an "Isolation Switch" Mode on F15 when Standing Still.
Pressing F15 while not moving will lower the prime mover and lock the motor. F15 must be turned off to begin moving.
Another Mode is "Reverser In Center Position". When pressing F24 while stopped, the motor will lock so you can throttle through the notches like the prototype in neutral. F24 must be turned off to begin moving.
This project has "Run 8" mode. When turning on F26 with F28 off, the prime mover goes to run 8. Turning off F26 returns the prime mover sounds back to normal mode.
This project has "Coast" mode. When turning on F27 with F28 off, the prime mover goes to idle for coasting purposes. Turning off F27 returns the prime mover sounds back to normal mode.
You can still use F26 and F27 for manual notching. You have to keep both F26 and F27 off before pressing F28 to turn on manual notching. Once F28 is on, you can use F26 to notch up and F27 to notch down. F26, F27, and F28 must be turned off to return to normal mode.
This project has "Load" mode. When turning on F29 with F15, F24, F26, F27, F28 off, the prime mover goes into load mode. While you are using load mode, the prime mover will notch up 1 or more notches based on primary load settings(CV104). The throttle notches up using speed instead of requested speed while using the load feature. F29 must be turned off to return to normal mode.

Auto Bell:
Many Second and Third Generation locomotives have been fitted with an Automatic Bell that is triggered when the horn is blown. In MANY cases this cannot even be bypassed on modern locos. Before the FRA mandated this feature on new locomotives the bell was of course turned on and off separately. Some locomotives were delivered with a manual bell and have been converted to an automatic bell. This creates a challenge in sound file creation.
We realize that not every loco with a particular prime mover had this feature. As such we have built in an option to turn the feature on and off. We will set the default in the file to be what is most appropriate for the particular file.
To turn the feature OFF - Auto Bell OFF:
1. Remove the Auto bell sound slot from the function mapping chart

This file was made SPECIFCALLY for the Athearn SD80MAC and is function mapped for their lighting. This special mapping includes the "Pusher Lights" on F5
The SD80MAC is a 5000 horsepower C-C diesel-electric locomotive. The SD80MAC uses a 20 cylinder version of EMD's 710G prime mover,formally known as the V-20 710G3B-ES and is the first diesel locomotive to use a 20-cylinder engine since the SD45/SD45-2. The SD80MAC introduced a wide radiator housing similar to GE locomotives and the placement of dynamic brakes at the rear of the locomotive. Key spotting difference between the SD80MAC and SD90MAC include: no external rear sandbox on the 90MAC, rear number boards, and the placement of the front numberboards (above the cab windows on the SD80MAC, on the nose on most SD90MACs). The SD80MAC also has recessed red marker lights in the nose, an identifying feature unique to Conrail locomotives, although NS has removed the lights on most of their former Conrail engines.
We've tried to be as prototypical as possible with this iconic locomotive. Because of this, the notching on this SD80MAC file may be slightly different from what you are used to. Like many modern EMDs there is a warm-up cycle when you initially turn on the prime mover. This will cause the prime mover to rise and hold for a short period of time. There is also a high and low idle dictated by the isolation switch. If the isolation switch is not activated Notch 1 and Notch 2 are the same as this is high idle. Activating the islolation switch will drop the sounds to low idle.

This project is an isolation switch based low idle version. It has a single turbo late (silenced) exhaust stack.
File also contains a "low Idle" Mode on F15 when Standing Still.
Pressing F15 while not moving will lower the prime mover and lock the motor. F15 must be turned off to go to "regular idle" and begin moving.
Another Mode is "Reverser In Center Position". When pressing F24 while stopped, the motor will lock so you can throttle through the notches like the prototype in neutral. F24 must be turned off to begin moving.
This project has "Run 8" mode. When turning on F26 with F28 off, the prime mover goes to run 8. Turning off F26 returns the prime mover sounds back to normal mode.
This project has "Coast" mode. When turning on F27 with F28 off, the prime mover goes to idle for coasting purposes. Turning off F27 returns the prime mover sounds back to normal mode.
You can still use F26 and F27 for manual nothing. You have to keep both F26 and F27 off before pressing F28 to turn on manual notching. Once F28 is on, you can use F26 to notch up and F27 to notch down. F26, F27, and F28 must be turned off to return to normal mode.
This project has "Load" mode. When turning on F29 with F15, F24, F26, F27, F28 off, the prime mover goes into load mode. While you are using load mode, the prime mover will notch up 1 or more notches based on primary load settings(CV104). The throttle notches up using speed instead of requested speed while using the load feature. F29 must be turned off to return to normal mode.
This project has "DPU" mode. When turning on F5, the headlight and red marker lights activate on the end of the locomotive that is opposite from the direction of travel.
This file is also equipped with a Smart Start feature that cycles the prime mover on and off at intervals of your choice if the throttle is left at Idle and the loco is stopped.

Auto Bell:
Many Second and Third Generation locomotives have been fitted with an Automatic Bell that is triggered when the horn is blown. In MANY cases this cannot even be bypassed on modern locos. Before the FRA mandated this feature on new locomotives the bell was of course turned on and off separately. Some locomotives were delivered with a manual bell and have been converted to an automatic bell. This creates a challenge in sound file creation.
We realize that not every loco with a particular prime mover had this feature. As such we have built in an option to turn the feature on and off. We will set the default in the file to be what is most appropriate for the particular file.
To turn the feature OFF - Auto Bell OFF:

Between 1981 and 1983 Chessie rebuilt 67 EMD GP30 locomotives.
These were B&O and C&O GP30 units that went through Chessie's rebuilding program at both the Huntington and Cumberland shops. After rebuilding Chessie did not renumber the units, but CSX decided to give them their own number series once they took ownership.
GP-30Ms were internally rewired with some modular components similar to Dash 2 units. They also recieved new IDAC wheel slip control, D77 traction motors, and cab heaters. The orginal 567D prime mover retained turbocharging, but also recieved 645 Power Assemblies.

This file is custom mapped for the Athearn SD70ACU Locomotives using a 58429 ESU LokSound 21MTC decoder and the factory Athearn Motherboards.
As there are 2 different startups on the SD70ACU, Air Start for NS and Electric Start for CP, we have created a file for each version:

In some cases the railroads varied on horns. Please use the list below to set the appropriate horn and bell for your roadname using CV163 and CV164.
The EMD SD70ACU is a 6-axle 4,300 hp (3,200 kW) diesel-electric locomotive originally built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division as an SD9043MAC, and rebuilt by Norfolk Southern and Progress Rail. They are operated by two railroads, Norfolk Southern railway and Canadian Pacific.
The SD70ACU began under Norfolk Southern, who rebuilt its EMD SD90MACs to this configuration at its shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The first locomotive entered the rebuilding process in September 2015, which was number 7299. As of 2019, all 110 units have been released into active service.
All of the SD70ACUs will be rebuilt with the latest EMD cab which meets current FRA crashworthiness standards. The Siemens electronics will be replaced with Mitsubishi electronics. The rebuild also includes the installation of Ultra Cab II, locomotive speed limiter (LSL), and cab signals. The trucks will be rebuilt only as needed and they are not getting traction motors swapped out.
In 2018, Canadian Pacific started a similar rebuild program with its long dormant SD90MAC fleet. Unlike NS, the work on these rebuilds was not be done in-house, but by Progress Rail at its Mayfield, Kentucky and Muncie, Indiana facilities.
In early 2021 CP bought 40 more SD90MACs from Union Pacific to continue the SD70ACU rebuild program. Some CP-patched, ex-Union Pacific SD90MACs have already been seen heading to Canada prior to rebuilding.
While not directly recorded from a SD70ACU we believe this to be an accurate representation using very similar recordings.
This project is a special notch based low idle with an automatic high idle version. It has a single turbo late (silenced) exhaust stack.
This ESU Sound file will operate like the prototype in terms of throttle notching. You will notice there is low and high idle, and once above notch 3 and back to Idle the prime mover will stay up in high idle for a period of time. Once in low idle throttling up to notch 1 or notch 2 and return to idle will stay in low idle.
