Manufacturer: ESU, Item number: S0009, Version: V2-R2
From 1913 onwards, the Bavarian State Railway purchased a total of 15 samples of the Gt 2x 4/4 Mallet tank locomotive to push heavy freight trains on the steep routes in the Franconian Forest and Thuringian Forest. Although the 1,470 hp eight-axle locomotives were considered the most powerful tank locomotives in Europe at the time, manufacturer Maffei was able to limit the maximum axle load to 15.5 t, which is why the powerful locomotives could even be used on branch lines. With various changes, a second series consisting of ten locomotives was purchased in 1922, which was slightly heavier with an axle load of 16.4 t and also more powerful with 1,630 hp. The top speed of both types was 50 km/h. The DRG took over all 25 locomotives as the 96 series and also used them outside of Bavaria, for example on the Brügge - Lüdenscheid route in North Rhine-Westphalia, as the Prussian T20 (BR 95) originally planned to replace the Mallet locomotives were too heavy. After the Second World War, 18 locomotives came to the DB, which gave up its now heavily worn 96 in 1948. Two locomotives remained with the DR, which sold them as heating locomotives in 1954.
