From 1950 the German Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) started trials with road-rail trucks and omnibuses, including buses from the Northwest German Vehicle Works NWF. In 1953, these attempts resulted in an order for 50 rail-road buses, each with two separate biaxial rail bogies. The latter was made by Waggon- und Maschinenbau Donauwörth WMD. In addition to the brake system with an additional air compressor, the installation of a second reverse gear designed for speeds of up to 40 km/h was a major change compared to the NWF road buses. Pans seated in support crosses at the bow and stern of the bus took up the pivots of the bogies, which is why the bus is, strictly speaking, a bogie vehicle. Propulsion was carried out by an 88 kW six-cylinder engine via a manual four-speed gearbox on the rubber-tyred rear axle of the bus. The maximum speed allowed was 120 km/h on the rails and 90 km/h on the road. A single Schi-Stra bus has been preserved and is in the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum.Braking function:
