The history of the Class 70/74/C-19 locomotives is confusing at best. All built as narrow gauge consolidations in 1881, some were converted to standard gauge at the end of that decade (1889). Eleven years later, in 1900, they were all switched back to narrow gauge and put back into the original 400-411 series of numbers, but were not given their original numbers back.
In early 1936, the D&RGW leased three C-19s - 343, 345, and 346 - to the C&S. C&S had wrecked engines 73 and 75 on Boreas Pass in Jan 1936, and due to weather conditions would be unable to retrieve them until spring. During their time on the C&S, all three received C&S Ridgway spark arrestors, and at least 346 had half flanges turned into its blind drivers to help with adhesion. 346 was wrecked a mile below Kenosha Pass on 25 Jul 1936, but was subsequently rebuilt by the C&S shops and continued in lease service right up until the end of the C&S narrow gauge in Apr 1937. At that point, all three were returned to the D&RGW.
#346 now lives at the Colorado Railroad Museum where is runs regularly.
While recorded from an early 2-8-0 this file can be used for smaller locomotives in many wheel arrangments.

Opposite of “Heavy Load” Coast allows for a negative offset allow drifting sounds of Rods and snifter valves at any speed. You again have the option to hold the speed to adjust the speed with this offset active. Even allowing for an increase of speed with no chuffs as if drifting downhill.

Identical to the Full Throttle Diesel files. This allows for the locomotive to stop more quickly than its regular momentum would normally carry it. By adding Sound Slot 2 to the F8 Function Mapping and enabling the "Secondary Trigger" (CV250) you can add a second set of drivers making any ESU Steam File articulated.

Many Steam locomotives had a single chime airhorn equipped. Those modelling SP, MILW, and others can now have this feature and put it where they would like in the function mapping in addition to the whistle.

Number 110 was the flagship stem locomotive of the Little River Railroad. It was special ordered by Colonel W. B. Townsend, so as to combine the power of a logging (Shay) locomotive with the speed of a traditional passenger train locomotive. It was further distinguished by the fact that it was the smallest Pacific type engine ever built in the United States to run on standard gauge track.
While recorded from a 1911 4-6-2 Pacific this file can be used for smaller locomotives in many wheel arrangments.

The Lehigh Valley Coal Company #126 "Sadie" is an 0-6-0ST saddle tank engine, built by Vulcan Iron Works for the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, and put into service in May 1931. She is now owned by the Grammling family in Indiana.

The Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. No. 58 is a 24" gauge 0-4-0T steam locomotive built in 1937 by the HK Porter Co. in Pittsburgh, PA for use at the J&L South Side Works. It was restored to operating condition at the Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum in Youngstown, OH.
Located in Youngstown, Ohio, the J&L Narrow Gauge Railroad is a 24" gauge steel mill demonstration railroad where historic narrow gauge rail equipment used in steelmaking and heavy industry is preserved and operated. The centerpiece of the railroad is the J&L 58, a 45 ton Porter 0-4-0 Tank locomotive once used by Jones & Laughlin Steel in Pittsburgh.
While recorded from a narrow gauge 1937 0-4-0T this file can be used for smaller locomotives in many wheel arrangments.

Strasburg Railroad (Canadian National) No. 89 is a 2-6-0 "Mogul" type steam locomotive originally built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in February 1910 for the Canadian National Railway. It is now owned and operated by the Strasburg Rail Road outside of Strasburg, Pennsylvania where it resides today for use on excursion trains.

Whistles from Iowa Interstate #6988
The QJ (Chinese: 前进; pinyin: Qián Jìn; lit. 'To go forward" or "to advance') was a type of heavy freight steam locomotive used by China Railway. The majority were built by Datong locomotive factory. The prototypes and early production of the class were designated HP (Chinese: 和平; pinyin: Hé Píng; lit. 'peace'), being redesignated as FD (Chinese: 反帝; pinyin: Fǎn Dì; lit. 'Anti-Imperialism') class during the Cultural Revolution, before becoming the QJ class in 1971.
The class became the primary mainline freight locomotive on the Chinese rail network by the 1980s, and were then displaced by diesel locomotives in 2005. After the end of steam on the national Chinese railway network many QJ locomotives were used on industrial lines, as well as on the Jitong railway. Several of the class have been preserved.
Two units withdrawn from use in China, numbers 6988 and 7081 (both former Jitong Railway), were originally acquired by the Iowa Interstate Railroad and later donated to Central States Steam Preservation Association.[12][13] A third, number 7040 (re-numbered to 2008), was acquired by the Lexington, Kentucky-based R.J. Corman Railroad Group in 2008, and operated until 2013, when it was placed on display in a specially built glass display building in Lexington.[14] In 2020, Corman donated the engine to the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation.[15]
Iowa Interstate 7081 retains its original Chinese appearance with the exception of the Jitong lettering and logo being replaced with the Iowa Interstate's, and the mandatory changes required by U.S. law such as hand rails and a bell. IAIS 6988 was "Americanized" in time for operation at Train Festival 2011 in Rock Island, Illinois. The diesel-style bell originally installed when it arrived in Iowa was replaced with a steam engine type bell, the Chinese headlights were replaced with an American style light with a cast number plate under it, and an American steam whistle was installed. The steel sheet on the front was removed and all red paint was painted over in black, with white trim on the running boards, wheel rims, etc. The R.J. Corman locomotive has been heavily modified. Most notably the smoke deflectors have been removed along with new paint and skirts along the running boards.
This file is set up for the American Iowa Interstate 6988 version with 3 whistles recorded from that loco.
While recorded from a 2-10-2 Chinese QJ this file can be used for large "2-10-2" "Santa Fe" type or other large locomotives in many wheel arrangments.

This is a 2-6-6-2T articulated Mallet that was built by The Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1926.
Pacific Northwest steam historian Martin Hansen offers this perspective: “This 1926 Baldwin 2-6-6-2T spent her entire working career in logging service in the Pacific Northwest. Originally ordered as a coal burner for the Potlach Lumber Co. of Potlach, Idaho where she was No. 24, she later converted to burn oil when she was purchased by Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. for use on that company’s Headquarters Operation out of Longview, Wash., where she became No. 108. She was one of only three Baldwin logging Mallets to be built with full saddle tanks over her boiler, rather than the more common split side tanks found on other tank Mallets of the day.”
The restoration on 108 was completed in 2020 and ran together with the ,110 another 2-6-6-2T, on the Blck Hills Central Railroads first double header.
True Mallet Locomotives are compound locomotives utilizing the steam multiple times. Because the exhaust from the first cylinders (high pressure) gets reused by the next set of cylinders (low pressure) the "double chuff" often associated with articulated locomotives is not really present. They are heard in the more common "simple" type articulated locomotives which are easier to mantain.
While recorded from a 2-6-6-2T this file can be used for simiar Compound Mallet type locomotives.

The ESU Full Throttle Steam files now include a few new logic features for added operational realism while still leaving you in control of HOW YOU wish to run your locomotive.
Heavy Load: F9 by default.
Similar to the “Drive Hold” button on the Full Throttle Diesel files “Heavy Load” allows you to adjust the “Steam Cut Off Valve” at any speed allowing for a fierce full chuff or drifting with snifters and rod clanks. Heavy load can also act as an offset allowing speed adjustments when engaged if desired.
Coast: F4 by default.
Opposite of “Heavy Load” Coast allows for a negative offset allow drifting sounds of Rods and snifter valves at any speed. You again have the option to hold the speed to adjust the speed with this offset active. Even allowing for an increase of speed with no chuffs as if drifting downhill.
Independent brake: F10 by default
Identical to the Full Throttle Diesel files. This allows for the locomotive to stop more quickly than its regular momentum would normally carry it. This one is pretty self-explanatory – just press the brake and come to a stop! For additional options there are 3 Braking rates that can be set up for user preference.
Articulation: Sound Slot 2
By adding Sound Slot 2 to the F8 Function Mapping and enabling the "Secondary Trigger" (CV250) you can add a second set of drivers making any ESU Steam File articulated.
Function Mappable Air Horn: F21 by default
Sound Slot 21.
Many Steam locomotives had a single chime airhorn equipped. Those modelling SP, MILW, and others can now have this feature and put it where they would like in the function mapping in addition to the whistle.

Steam locomotive number 11 was constructed in 1920 by the Cooke Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in Paterson, New Jersey. It is a “2‑6‑0” or “Mogul” type and was one of 54 engines of four different wheel arrangements built between 1920 and 1925 intended for export to Cuba and use in that country’s sugar cane fields.
In fall of 2015, the locomotive returned to service for the first time since the early 1970s and will serve as the Everett railroad’s primary excursion power going forward.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad #1702 is a 2-8-0 steam locomotive, built in September 1942 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA. Originally destined to be US Army Transportation Corp #1702, part of their S160 class of 2-8-0 Consolidations, which were also built by Lima & ALCO between 1942 and 1945.

Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad 425 is a 4-6-2 light "Pacific" type steam locomotive originally built in 1928 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. After the GM&N was consolidated into the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad in 1940, the locomotive was renumbered #580 and served in passenger service before being retired in 1950. Today, the locomotive is owned and operated by the Reading & Northern Railroad, based out of Port Clinton, Pennsylvania in excursion service.
While recorded from a light pacific 4-6-2 this file can be used for smaller locomotives in many wheel arrangments.
